There's no beating around the bush - farm equipment is expensive. It'll cost you an arm and a leg...and the other arm and the other leg. To tackle this issue, many people opt for used farm equipment. This can be a great way to cut costs while still getting the tractor you need. But you need to do your research to avoid buying a lemon. We created the following beginner's guide to buying used tractors below. When you are ready to look at options, visit Atlantic Tractor. We proudly serve those in Delaware.

Types of Tractors

Within the vast world of farm equipment, there are many types of tractors. Each is tailored to meet specific needs. It helps to narrow your search to one style of tractor before you hit the internet or walk into a dealership. Otherwise, you can get quickly overwhelmed by the options!

First, there are compact utility tractors. These run small, which means they'll cost less and guzzle up less fuel. They are ideal for small landscaping and gardening projects.

Next, there are utility tractors. These are much larger, general purpose tractors. They are meant for use in the field for farm work and production.

Then, there are row crop unit tractors. These are specialized for working in the field. You can easily add implements to specializing them even more.

Finally, there are articulated 4WD tractors. These are specialized for tillage and seeding.

Inspecting Used Tractors

After you decide what type of tractor you want, you can start looking at used options. When you found one you think you want, you'll want to conduct an inspection. You're looking for any red flags that could cause you an issue down the road, whether its maintenance repair costs or performance issues. The main approach is to look for discrepancies between the wear and tear on the farm equipment and the number of hours showing on the gauge.

Then you'll want to inspect the specifics. Is the wear on the carpet, foot pedals, cab, and tire reasonable considering the hours used? Can you turn the steering wheel back and forth? If you notice an oblong or rebuilt hitch hole, it suggests high hour usage. Does that match the odometer?

Next, examine your tires. Look for uneven wear. Make sure there is over half the original lug depth at all points. Tires will lose traction if they fall below this point, making it difficult (or impossible) to use on tough terrain.

Finally, scope out your engine. Inspect the crankshaft and O-rings. See how long it takes to start. If the engine smoke isn't a healthy black color or doesn't clear up right away, it could be an issue.

Appearance

Sure, you may not care much what your farm equipment looks like. It just needs to get the job done! But when you are examining used tractors, it's important to give attention to the overall appearance. A well-maintained tractor will show in its appearance. You should find a nice cover, no painted over rust, no obvious wear from overuse or harsh weather conditions. A poor looking tractor suggests a poor running tractor.
