We are finishing up small grain harvest and should have collected the harvest data which we can use along with previous harvest data to fine tune our future crop production.

Data should be on everyone's mind.  Yield data, moisture, acres harvested, total bushels produced and crop pricing.  These are some of the data points which we can keep track of in the Operations Center as farmers.  How do we make sense of it all?  How do we break it down to what's important and what isn't?  The important point is are we profitable? Are we improving our farming economics?  Can we continue to grow our operations for future generations?

Harvest data for most farmers means what are my yields.  When running your combine through a corn crop being harvested and watching the yield monitor on your display top out at 300 plus bushels per acre, is a lot of fun.  It's not just bushels that count, it is what it takes to produce those bushels.  Am I profitable on every acre or are there areas in my field where I am losing money? The data which we are collecting need to be used in developing a plan to correct those unprofitable areas and help increase the profitable areas. We must be sure to place importance on every acre within our operation.

When evaluating harvest data, it shows us how we are treating each individual part of your farm.  We can't treat every farm and its components the same.  Managing our farm operation needs to be done for positive growth and profit.  Harvest data is going to be extremely important as we look to future production.  Good data is going to drive premiums in the marketplace, as I have mentioned in previous articles.  There are companies paying premiums in the marketplace for crop quality, starch, oil, and nutrient density of that crop.  This will help us look at better profits and not just yield.

We have a tendency to mix all production systems and crops into bulk commodities.  Complete combinations of data will be used to find unique, value added opportunities in the marketplace.

The John Deere Operations Center has all the components  needed to assist our farmers in collecting their data and using it in sustainability and profitability of their operation.
