Choose the Type of Controls

There are four main types of zero turn mower controls. The right choice for you is simply a matter of preference.

The most common option is the lap bar. With this design, there are two levers placed at lap level. They control the wheels independently.

The easiest to learn is the steering wheel. It functions similarly to a car's steering wheel.

Next is the joystick. This involves a controller that can be moved in four different directions.

Finally, there is the stand-up controls option. The operator will stand up while driving the zero turn mower, which helps cut down on the fatigue caused by sitting.

Choose the Deck Size

Deck size affects the cutting area that a zero turn mower can take on. There are two key considerations to make.

First, what's the smallest area that the zero turn mower needs to fit? Think about any fence gates the mower needs to go through, any obstacles it needs to navigate around, and so on.

Second, what's the best size to maximize productivity? Larger cutting decks can get the job done faster!

In general:

  • A 42'' cutting deck can handle up to one acre of land.
  • A 42'' to 46'' cutting deck can handle up to two acres of land.
  • A 46'' to 50'' cutting deck can handle up to three acres of land.
  • A 50'' or more cutting deck is best for commercial jobs.

Choose the Engine Size

Make sure to pick an engine size that suits your property's grass type and can handle any slopes in the terrain. This may not be the biggest engine that you can afford. Focus on what best suits your needs rather than simply getting the biggest engine possible.

Choose the Features

Zero turn mowers can come with various features. These add to the mower's sticker price, but they also improve the ownership experience. Common features include a low noise design, LED headlights, and an overhead canopy.

Spend some time researching the various feature offerings so that you know what's available, then decide the amenities that best suit your needs.
